When a family on a sailing outing gets stuck in a surprise storm, there’s only one boat tough enough to handle the rocking waves and howling winds: Blue Boat! Completing the primary-colored series of books that have won fans across the country, the team behind Red Truck and Yellow Copter present their third rhyming book about a vehicle who saves the day.
Author Kersten Hamilton continues her series of introducing young readers to equipment and colors, by introducing us to Blue Boat - a little tug boat who navigates the sea. When a family is trapped on the ocean, it's Blue Boat who races to the rescue.
This is a short and zippy story, that both effectively introduces readers to the idea of what a boat is, and how a boat is commanded and used on a daily basis. It's a great lesson for young readers to begin to understand objectives and occupations, and also for any young readers who just like boats.
Hamilton also uses short, rhyming sentences to great effect; it's impossible to not read the book with a smile on one's face, especially as she seems to have a knack for picking words and sentences that beautifully illustrate Blue Boat's adventures, as the boat tries to reach the stranded family.
Outside of Hamilton's writing, illustrator Valeria Petrone's emphasis on solid and primary colors, will easily help younger readers begin to identity their colors.
All in all, this is exactly the type of book you want to give to the young reader in your life. My original package came with a board book as well, and my friend swooped in and nabbed the book for her young son. He's loving it, and you will too.
