Full review:
Debut author Erin Summerill introduces us to seventeen year-old Britta Flannery, a skilled tracker and orphaned outcast who has been given an impossible choice. Either she finds former friend (and crush!) Cohen Mackay who has allegedly killed her father, or her life becomes forfeit to the state.
First things first: while Summerill has created a fascinating fantasy world that has startling geopolitical similarities to our own, my love of this book particularly centers around the cat and mouse hunt which continuously evolves throughout the course of the book - for they are, ever the hunted.
The chase begins with Britta losing faith in Cohen, forced to track him through the woods. Her lost of faith in him is thoughtfully dissected, and Summerill shows just how challenging it can be, for someone who is now living in a world where no one can be trusted. There’s a certain degree of self-reflection as Britta is forced to question her instinctive understanding of the truth, and whether she’s been wrong about a close one all along.
It’s a stark micro reflection of the world that she now finds herself in, especially as we learn more about the ongoing antagonism between Malam and Shaerdan, And as the chase evolves from Britta/Cohen to Britta/Cohen and the greater world at large, Summerill writes a confident theme of battling against expectations, getting to the bottom of the truth in an increasingly complicated world, and looking toward the future.
The book leaves off with more room to explore in the future, and I’m looking forward to it.

About the author:
Erin Summerill was born in England. After spending years bouncing between Air Force bases in Hawaii, England, and California, her family settled in Utah, where Erin graduated with a B.A. in English from Brigham Young University. She had aspirations to write the next great American novel, but writing proved tougher than she first thought. So she grabbed a Nikon and became a professional photographer while crafting manuscript after manuscript. The scenic detour of shooting weddings across the United States, as well as internationally, provided world-building inspiration. It gave her the vision to draft her debut YA fantasy, EVER THE HUNTED. Now when she isn’t writing, or shooting a wedding, she’s chasing her four kids, two dogs, one cat, and five chickens. This could be why she downs massive amounts of Coke Zero and Hot tamales.
