Author/Illustrator Greg Ruth sketches out an almost wordless story of a young boy awaiting the homecoming of a loved one in uniform. When the big day arrives, the young boy's hopes and anticipation feels like a lifetime, as he breathlessly with others who are similarly experiencing that same feeling.
Brown's illustrations are spot on, perfectly capturing the sheer exhilaration as those who are waiting, anticipate that moment where loved ones are reunited. Even without words, readers will perfect understand the boy's expressions as he waits for a long separation to end.
This book is perfect for young readers from aged three and up, who can easily absorb the story. The drawings also feel rich and warm, and will make readers feel safe and comfortable with what can occasionally be a difficult topic.
Bottom line: Coming Home is an exquisite book that beautifully sketches out the hopes, emotions and dreams of every family who has breathlessly awaited the coming home of a loved one in uniform. Ruth's understanding of that moment when loved ones meet again, will absolutely move hearts everywhere.
I highly recommend this for young readers everywhere, but especially for young readers who do have family members in service, and may need a bit of reassurance that they will soon be reunited again.
