This friendly, fun biography series focuses on the traits that made our heroes great--the traits that kids can aspire to in order to live heroically themselves. Jim Henson, for example, was always dreaming up something new, and always expressing his belief in the goodness of people. Henson was a born performer with a terrific sense of humor, and he used those talents to help create two of the most beloved programs in television history: The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. Through his Muppets, Jim showed the world that there s nothing more beautiful than imagination, especially when it s accompanied by laughter and kindness.
Each book in this series tells the story of one inspiring individual through lively text and art that works well for the youngest nonfiction readers. At the back are an excellent timeline and photos."
Brad Meltzer bring Jim Henson's childhood and background to life in this latest installment , showing readers how a talented, big-hearted young boy, grew into someone with the imagination, talent and cheerful determination, to bring together an entire cast of iconic Muppets, that still resonate today.
There's a lovely emphasis on the positive reinforcement that Henson experienced when he was younger, incluing his family's penchant for jokes, his reenactments, how his grandparents encouraged his desire to draw things that made him happy and how that positive reinforcement encouraged him to explore different ideas in terms of how to bring the world of the Muppets to life.
There's a strong emphasis on Henson's refusal to give up even in the face of constant rejection, and how Henson gamely tackled puppetry, even though he had no idea how to do it. Readers will appreciate that reminder that it's always possible to tackle something and even fail, but continue working until you succeed even if you have no experience.
Meltzer than transitions to the world of Sesame Street, and how there's a strong emphasis on the importance of diversity, sharing and getting along - lessons that are especially important even now. With Eliopolus spot-on illustrations at usual, this book is a winner all around. All in all, this is an absolute asset to the Ordinary People Change the World series.
Bottom line: Readers have seen Henson through the eyes of Sesame Street and The Muppets. Meltzer and Eliopoulous introduce readers to his life beyond Kermit, and show how perseverance, kindness and creativity helped Henson on his journey to bringing such a whimsical world to life.
