Albert, Tom, Flossie, and Pipkin love to play. And while they have fun inventing games together, their biggest wish is to have friends to share them with. One day, something magical happens. A family of squirrels moves in across the stream! They could be the perfect friends—but how will they cross the stream?
With a little help from Father Rabbit, Albert, Tom, Flossie, and Pipkin will discover just how wonderful it is when the world is full of friends. This touching story from the duo behind When the World Is Ready for Bed and When the World Was Waiting for You will warm the hearts of readers young and old.
Author Gillian Shields and illustrator Anna Currey reintroduces us to the rabbit family from her previous books, who are now looking forward to making new friends. When a squirrel family moves in across the stream, they are delighted - but how can they get across to meet their new pals?
Like her previous two titles, Shields finds joy in the simplest of things - playing, being creative, or even just admiring the sunlight. It's a lovely, warm reminder that the world can be magical, just about anywhere you look. This same thought applies to the developing friendship between the rabbits and the squirrels; there's a joy in the desire of the rabbits to get to their new friends, and you can't help but cheer on the creativity of their efforts and the help from their parents.
Currey's illustrations are vivid and have a earthy palette, which will likely remind older readers of Beatrix Potter's tales. All in all, this book was a delight, and belongs on the shelves of all young readers. Highly recommend, full stop.
