A Q&A with M. Tara Crowl
Author of Eden's Escape
But I am especially lucky because the students I’ve met through school visits are so incredibly cool. My debut was released a year ago, and since then, I have come to learn firsthand how intelligent, passionate, curious, and courteous middle-grade readers are.
Several times, students have given me drawings inspired by the Eden books, or books of their own that they’ve written and assembled.
Often, they ask truly challenging questions. (Sometimes, they completely stump me.)
At one school, I was hosted by the fifth-grade Student Council. The officers escorted me between classrooms, made sure I was comfortable, and put on a lunch for me. Their kindness and professionalism blew me away.
And after many visits, students have sent me thoughtful, creative thank-you notes.
When I started writing books, it was simply for the love of making up stories. I had no idea that meeting readers would turn out to be the most special part of the whole thing. I have to marvel at the way these stories have allowed me to connect with so many amazing young people.
I can’t wait to meet more of them. And I really can’t wait to read the books I know they’re going to write someday.
About the book:
David Brightly isn’t like other wishers Eden has met. The owner of the world’s leading tech company seems more interested in tapping into the lamp’s power than making his first wish. Trapped in Brightly’s laboratory and unable to get to the lamp, Eden has no choice but to escape and go on the run.
She finds herself on the streets of Paris, nowhere near out of danger. Brightly has half the city searching for Eden, claiming she is his kidnapped daughter. She manages to don a disguise and get word of her predicament out to the loyal genies on earth. But Paris is also headquarters of Electra, a group of former genies bent on revenge against Eden, and it seems the scheming Sylvana has teamed up with Brightly to seize the lamp’s power once and for all.
Eden embarks on a dangerous mission to retrieve the lamp and protect the centuries-old genie legacy. But Brightly has more tricks up his sleeve than any mortal Eden has met. Soon, every genie will have to pick a side in an epic showdown against the greatest threat the lamp has ever faced.
