1) He's a great writer who's very generous with his time,
2) He has a delightful sense of humor that's evident in everything from his emails and tweets to his books,
2) He writes non-fiction books that answer the big questions. These are the questions that every person, both young and old, have always to ask about "...body parts and processes", but have never found the courage to do so.
Well, never fear - because Artie has you covered.
In Belches, Burps and Farts - Oh My! Artie discusses one of the most body's most giggle-worthy functions of all: gas!
Along the way, Artie jauntily writes rhyming lines that are easy to read, but also helps explain relatively complex facts and ideas to even the youngest of readers. Artie is especially good at picking the type of facts that will make curious youngesters want to do their own research, e.g. the fact that we cannot burp when on our backs.
(Don't think I won't try to disprove this too, Artie! *grin*)
The book's fantastic prose and memorable facts, are only enhanced by Pranas T. Naujokaitis's colorful illustrations. Naujokaitis has a knack for not only bringing Artie's lines to life, but also for adding in the small details that really make the scene.
I know I giggled madly over all of the facial expressions of various animals and humans while reading, and keep finding new details each time I reread the book.
Artie concludes the book with two pages of fun facts and knowledgable facts, which had me turning to Tom every couple of minutes and asking, "…hey, did you know…?"
Bottom line: this is a fun, age-appropriate book that turns an occasionally-taboo subject into a fun, lively book that explores science, nature and how our bodies work.
I know that I came away from reading Belches, Burps and Farts-Oh, My! with a renewed appreciation for Artie's perfectly-crafted prose, and also with a large number of facts that I didn't know previously about gaseous interactions within the human body.
This book - like all of Artie's other books - is perfect for readers, both young and old. Younger readers will enjoy the vibrant drawings, snappy lines and fun facts, while older readers will appreciate Artie's witty humor and for writing books that help explain bodily functions to younger readers.
(Seriously. My boss saw my copy, and immediately went: "That's PERFECT. My nephew is right at the age where he thinks farts are funny, and wants to know how they work.")
I recommend this for everyone, full stop.
So we're going to give away a set of the last four books that Artie's written including Belches, Burps and Farts -Oh My! + a bonus copy of Belches, Burps and Farts - Oh My! to gift to a child/library in your life. So that's five books total!
Get ready to learn about butts, poop, belches, farts and melting down!
