Happy Friday, guys!
Today, we're proud to join the paperback tour for Compulsion by Martina Boone.
I had the honor of hearing her speak at a debut author panel at ALA Annual in Las Vegas, so it was fantastic finally getting to read the book!
Read on for my review, and for a very cool scavenger hunt!
Martina introduces us to Barrie Watson, who is in the process of taking a leap into the great unknown. After her mother psses away, Barrie goes to live with her aunt at the family plantation in South Carolina. However, Barrie quickly learns that there's something not quite right about the estate.
Barrie eventually learns about the mysterious history of the island, including the island's origin story of being inhabited by the Fire Carrier, a ghost who has cleared and controlled the lands of YUNWI or mysterious spirits, and of a three-way feud involving the Watsons, Beauforts and Colesworth. With this information, it's now up to Barrie to figure out the rest of the family secrets, and the truth about her legacy...
If there's one word that I would use to describe Compulson, it's otherworldly. Boone has a knack for descriptive imagery, and has set the book against a fantastic world filled with mysterious histories, creeping moss and otherworldly visitors. I felt like I had been transported to a far-off land while reading, breathing the very air that Barrie was breathing, and also feeling equally shocked and surprised by each and every revelation.
Boone has a gift for writing both characters and pacing; each of Barrie's new acquaintances were both charming and likable with backgrounds of their own, but also added to the overall story, and Barrie's overall journey. They all felt like puzzle pieces coming together, especially when you figured out how the dynamics of the families worked.
Pacing wise, Boone does an excellent job of keeping the momentum of the story going, from beginning to end. Even though the book was relatively long by YA standards (400+ pages), I felt like the thread of the story just kept pulling me along. When I finished readin, it was like no-time had passed at all.
Outside of the characters and the writing, I loved Boone's detailed world-building. I actually wasn't really expecting the intricate details - e.g. the Fire Carrier backstory; the details of the sacrifices to the Yunwi - that Martina thought to include, and felt that they made the story richer.
This is the perfect book for anyone who enjoys southern gothics, but also for people who are looking to get in the mood for fall. Martina has written the type of book that will make you want to curl up with a cup of tea, with a cozy blanket in your lap, and read as the wind rattles the windows around you. It's that good.
Highly recommend for all readers, full stop.
