Happy Wednesday, Reading Nook!
Tom and I attend ALA Las Vegas last week - our first conference ever - and had an amazing time!
We met publicists, librarians, bloggers, and that was only the beginning…
On the road again...
The fun begins!
Turns out, we weren't the only ones with that idea. We got there an hour before the doors opened, and there was already a huge line of people waiting to get in. It was kind of awesome - we ended up meeting a lot of researchers, bloggers, librarians and academics from around us while waiting.
And once the doors opened… the fun really began.
However, the best part was when I got to the front of the line and Mary read my badge, and she squealed… "I LOVE YOUR BLOG."
I know people obviously read this blog - hai, guys! - but it's kind of flattering and surprising to hear it in person. I think I may have come off kind of stern and shocked to Mary, so Mary - if you're reading this, I was beyond flattered you said that. You have literally made my year.
Also, a big big thanks to Jaime of Rockstar Book Tours/Month 9 Books for basically being our guide around ALA. You're awesome, Jaime! <3
And big thanks to all of the wonderful publishing folks we met - you are all lovely, and thank you for making Tom and I feel so welcome!!
Some highlights from the dinner:
* Jason booked a flight to Rome after receiving his advance, and had shoes custom-made at the Gucci store.
* Brendan loves the fact that one of his students annotated his book for a school project.
* Martina was (delightfully) surprised by her publisher asking for a second book in the series.
* SE Green is hilarious, and wrote her book in twenty-one days.
* CJ is very sweet and honest about the writing process, and also admits to buying a table tennis set with her advance.
Also, this happened after the dinner, so you know - life achievement unlocked.
I was introduced to Laini Taylor at the Sinner party, and we mutually gushed over Daniel O'Malley's Rook. I told her a sequel was coming out, and she told me she would get all of her family members to read it.
The S&S party was amazing - not only were there enough desserts in the room to satisfy my sweet tooth, all of the S&S authors at ALA attended as well. It was incredible being in a room with so many people that I've read and admired over the years.
All in all, my general takeaway from ALA is that there are an amazing number of people who work to bring book love to the world, and it's important that we can do what we can to support them.
The books are:
The Young World by Chris Weitz
The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare
Trial By Fire by Josephine Angelini
Tesla's Attic by Neal Schusterman
Welcome to Dark House by Laurie Stolarz
