Q: What were the challenges and/or benefits of writing NIL UNLOCKED?
Sequels are their own beasts, but not really, right? In the Nil series, NIL UNLOCKED is a sequel to NIL, and yet, NIL UNLOCKED also a companion novel of sorts, since it follows different main characters than the first book in the series. So we’re already getting to the tricky part for me: keeping track of my characters! Of all the characters!:)
Specifically as I wrote NIL UNLOCKED, when I went back to the island, I had to be mindful of people’s day counts and make sure I was consistent with the various deadlines I’d set in NIL. Also, because the plot lines and character arcs of the two novels weren’t precisely linear, I had to make sure that I didn’t write any story lines in NIL UNLOCKED that conflicted with events in NIL. But, despite these challenges, I had a huge amount of creative freedom! Rives and Skye (the main characters in NU) were different from Thad and Charley (the main characters in NIL), which meant their motivations and reactions would be different, making NIL UNLOCKED seriously fun to write.
As you mentioned Jess, I did have a deadline for NIL UNLOCKED, whereas with NIL, I didn’t. I actually didn’t mind writing on deadline because it pushed me to finish, especially when mired in the tough middle place of book writing. Writing pre-agent with all the time in the world and writing on deadline both have pros and cons. But, I think the deadline keeps an author from endless tinkering--at least it did me.:)
As for writing a sequel specifically, I wouldn’t necessarily say writing a sequel is easier, but with a sequel, the world-building is already established, which is a huge plus. The framework of the series is set, allowing you space to play and stretch the lines! I loved fleshing out the Nil world in NIL UNLOCKED, and answering questions I’d left open in NIL. I hope readers enjoy finding out Nil’s secrets as much as I enjoyed spilling them!:)
Thank you so much for having me on your blog today, Jess! And thank you for being an awesome part of the #NILtribe!:)
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer our question, Lynne! And both Tom and I feel like we've learned a lot about what it means to write a sequel - especially the sequel for one of our favorite trilogies.
(YES, it's going to be a trilogy!)
