Having a jetpack is fun--if you know what to do with one.
If you had a jetpack, you could:
* Teach your brother how to build one too.
* Demonstrate its usefulness at Show and Share Time at school.
* Give your principal a ride home.
* Fly south to visit your nana.
* Visit the astronauts on the space station and help with anything that needed fixing.
Join one inventive little rabbit as he and his brother put their new jetpack to good use!
However, that’s exactly what happened with IF YOU HAD A JET PACK, by Lisl Detlefsen. The premise itself is already brilliant - brother rabbits figure out how to build and operate a jet pack, and go on all sorts of funny, heartwarming adventures together.
…JETPACK is obviously a celebration of STEM, something parents will likely appreciate for young readers. Detlefsen charts the progress of creation of the jetpack - including cheerfully reminding readers to persevere - before, showing the kind of adventures the two brothers can get into, when they share the jetpack with the rest of the world.
Detlefsen is also careful to show adult engagement with the brothers, a lovely reminder that yes, adults can and should care about what young people (or young rabbits) are doing, and how many times, it’s the young people who think of solutions that help adults out of a jam - e.g. there’s a funny moment involving the principal in …JETPACK.
But Detlefsen is also delightfully selective with her words as well. Many of the sentences end with -ly words, which not only makes the sentences fun to read - seriously, try reading the words out loud - it also does the double-duty of teaching young readers important adverbs. It’s basically a book to help reading, and I’m confident readers and educators will appreciate it.
With illustrations by Linzie Hunter that are also vibrant and delightful - the lettering itself, is something to behold - this book has a place on every shelf. Highly recommend, full stop.
