Author Rob Sanders introduces us to Ruby Rose, who is intent on putting on a performance for her family. She spends the whole day doing so, and despite many setbacks, succeeds.
Sometimes, some of the simplest stories are the best ones, and this was absolutely the case with Ruby Rose, Big Bravos. Sanders does a magnificent job of showing just how one singular event - the performance - can take up a young child's entire day, and how that one event can happily overtake everything else. It's a reminder of just how magical being young can be, especially when you have a trusty bear best friend at your side.
The art is accentuated by Debbie Ohi's work - and as someone who counts her as a acquaintance, I will say, the art alone is worth the book - and should be a must have for every young shelf.
Highly recommend, full stop.
About the author and illustrator:
Rob Sanders is a writer who teaches and a teacher who writes. Every day he waltzes to Lockhart Elementary Magnet School in Brandon, Florida, to teach kids about books and words and reading and writing. Then he boogie-woogies back home to write books for children. On weekends and holidays you might find him boot-scooting with his dog, Baxter; hokey-pokeying at the beach with his great-nieces and -nephews; or cha-chaing with other children’s writers. Nothing makes his heart dance more than hearing boys and girls say, “Read it again!” Visit Rob’s website at www.robsanderswrites.com.
Debbie Ridpath Ohi writes and draws children’s books for a living. She has illustrated books by Judy Blume and Michael Ian Black and is the author-illustrator of Where Are My Books? She also illustrated Ruby Rose: Off to School She Goes. Secret fact: Debbie sometimes dances in her office when no one is looking. She lives in Toronto with her husband, Jeff.
