Today, we're sharing a hilarious and delightful Q&A with Will Mabbitt, the author of The Unlikely Adventures of Mabel Jones.
We were fortunate enough to get the opportunity to sit down with him, and discuss his book, writing in a female voice, and more!
MMGM is a feature hosted by (fabulous) author Shannon Messenger on her blog every week!
Author of The Unlikely Adventues of Mabel Jones
Mabel Jones goes on an amazingly exciting and hilarious pirate adventure when she is kidnapped from her bedroom by a silent loris.
Sometimes it seems like ideas pop into my head from nowhere but really I think these ideas have formed from years of daydreaming and a lifetime of reading all-sorts of books.
I just put myself in her position and think what would I do if I was brave and resourceful (two traits I am sadly lacking). The fact that she’s a girl doesn’t really change how she’d react to any of the crazy situations she gets Into. In terms of age. I think adults tend to think that they are very different to children but in reality the only real difference is that children are more honest about picking their noses.
You don’t need super-powers to be a hero.
It would be Pelf who is a goat on the pirate ship The Feroshus Maggot. He’s spent lifetime at sea and has many tales to tell. He’d also be able to teach me loads of new swear words. Unfortunately he smokes a foul smelling pipe so I’d have to insist on sitting upwind of him.
I will write at anytime but I’m most productive in the morning. Especially after a coffee. I definitely can’t write if I’m tired.
I love that word pantser. I had to look up what it meant! I wish I was a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of guy. I think that would be a cool way to work. Sadly I’m a plotter. But not so much that I can’t change my mind if I really want to. I guess that might actually make me a plontser.
Make yourself think that what you have made up is true. It’s no coincidence that this is also the secret to being a successful con-artist.
Q: And finally, could you share what’s next for you? When will we see Mabel gracing our fair shores next?
I’m so excited I could squeal because the second book is all finished. Mabel Jones and the Forbidden City is out in the USA in February 2016. I think you can even pre-order it now!
Thank you again, Will! :) I loved Mabel, and I know others will too!
