Denton Little’s Deathdate by Lance Rubin
Release Date: April 14th, 2015
Format read: ARC via publisher
Publisher: Knopf Books For Young Readers
Denton Little's Deathdate takes place in a world exactly like our own except that everyone knows the day they will die. For 17-year-old Denton Little, that's tomorrow, the day of his senior prom.
Despite his early deathdate, Denton has always wanted to live a normal life, but his final days are filled with dramatic firsts. First hangover. First sex. First love triangle (as the first sex seems to have happened not with his adoring girlfriend, but with his best friend's hostile sister. Though he's not totally sure. See: first hangover.) His anxiety builds when he discovers a strange purple rash making its way up his body. Is this what will kill him? And then a strange man shows up at his funeral, claiming to have known Denton's long-deceased mother, and warning him to beware of suspicious government characters…. Suddenly Denton's life is filled with mysterious questions and precious little time to find the answers.
Debut author Lance Rubin takes us on a fast, furious, and outrageously funny ride through the last hours of a teenager's life as he searches for love, meaning, answers, and (just maybe) a way to live on.
Rubin introduces us to seventeen-year-old Denton, who lives in a world where, thanks to the scientific efforts of AstroThanatoGenetics, people know exactly when they're going to die. But while most people have a fairly normal deathdate, Denton - like best friend Paolo - are Earlys, which means that they're going to die at a young date.
But on the eve of what should have been his deathdate, Denton discovers a mysterious rash on his thigh, which sets off a chain of events that unravel everything that he's ever known. Between mysteriously messages, mysterious visits and mysterious revelations, Denton needs to try and figure out just what's next for him...
While Rubin is a debut author, you can tell from the first page that he's an accomplished storyteller. Without hesitation, he throws us into a madcap, quirky journey for Denton, as he begins to realize that everything he's assumed about his life, is only a fraction of the reality surrounding him.
We see Denton go through the initial stages of grief, as he wonders if he's lived a life where he's really really taken the time to appreciate the small things and the right things. There's an especially hilariously awkward speech that Denton gives at his own funeral that will undoubtedly have readers both cringing in disbelief at some of the things that comes out of Denton's mouth, but also absolutely appreciating his sheer honesty and candid emotions, especially as he says and does what most readers have likely wanted to do, without repercussion.
Even when the book goes into Douglas Adams-esque sci-fi mystery territory, Rubin doesn't lose sight of the fact that this is still ultimately a story about Denton finding himself. Rubin is careful to show how the scientific revelations help Denton begin to focus on what he wants to know from life - e.g. developing a better understanding of who his mom was - and how he wants to go forward with what time he has left
While some readers may feel like Rubin ultimately doesn't give enough of an explanation for the actual mystery/science elements, I think that most people will feel that the focus on Denton's growth more than makes up for any specific explanations.
Bottom line: read this book. It's quirky, it's weird, and it's wholly unlike anything you've ever read before. You'll enjoy it, trust me.
Lance Rubin has written a hilarious, off-beat tale on growing up (and actually struggling to grow old), with a protagonist that has the warmth and heart that will make any and all readers fall in love with him. Denton may have been destined to be an Early, but I can guarantee that with the splotches and awkward bathroom encounters in this book, you're not going to forget him anytime soon.
Highly recommend for readers who enjoy their contemporary fiction with a bit of quirk, or for readers who enoy a bit of quirky science fiction. If you're the type of person who likes a healthy dose of Douglas Adams in your life, this is the book for you.
